Long, long ago, people did not know about camels. Then one day, some people saw a camel for the first time.
むかしむかし、人々はラクダのことを知りませんでした。そんなある日、何人かの人が、初めてラクダを見ました。
It was huge! It had very long legs, a long neck, and a big hump on its back. "A monster!" they cried. "Run!" And they all ran away and hid behind the rocks.
なんと大きいのでしょう！ とても長い足と長い首があり、背中には大きなこぶがあります。「怪物だ！」と、人々は叫びました。「逃げろ！」そして、みんな逃げ出して、岩のかげに隠れました。
The camel did not chase them. It only stood there and ate some leaves. After a while, one man looked out from behind a rock. "It is not running after us," he said. "It is just eating."
ラクダは追いかけてきませんでした。ただそこに立って、葉っぱを食べていました。しばらくして、一人の男が岩のかげから顔を出しました。「追いかけてこないぞ」と、男は言いました。「ただ食べているだけだ」
The next day, the people came a little closer. The camel looked at them with big, gentle eyes. It did not bite. It did not kick. It only chewed slowly.
次の日、人々はもう少しだけ近づいてみました。ラクダは大きな優しい目で、人々を見ました。かみつきもせず、けりもしませんでした。ただ、ゆっくりと口をもぐもぐ動かしているだけでした。
"Maybe it is not a monster," said a woman. "It looks kind."
「怪物じゃないのかもしれないわね」と、一人の女の人が言いました。「やさしそうだもの」
Day by day, they came closer and closer. Soon they touched its soft nose. The camel did not mind. It was a very calm and gentle animal.
人々は、日ごとにどんどん近づいていきました。まもなく、ラクダの柔らかい鼻にさわれるようになりました。ラクダは平気でした。とても穏やかで、おとなしい動物だったのです。
Before long, the people were not afraid at all. They put a rope on the camel's head. They put heavy bags on its back. And one day, a small child held the rope and led the big camel through the village.
やがて、人々はまったく怖がらなくなりました。ラクダの頭にロープをつけ、背中に重い荷物を載せました。そしてある日、小さな子どもがロープを持って、大きなラクダを引いて村の中を歩いていきました。
Everyone laughed. "Look at that!" they said. "And we ran away from this animal!"
みんなは笑いました。「見てごらん！」と、みんなは言いました。「わたしたちは、この動物から逃げ出したんだよ！」
