Russell Conwell was an American teacher and minister. He gave the same speech, called Acres of Diamonds, more than six thousand times. With the money from it, he helped many young people go to college, and he started a university. The speech begins with a story he heard from an old guide on a trip down the Tigris River.
Long ago, said the guide, a Persian farmer named Ali Hafed lived near the River Indus. He had a large farm with fruit trees, fields of grain and beautiful gardens. He had money, too. He was rich, and he was happy.
One day, an old priest visited Ali Hafed. He sat by the fire and told him how the world was made. Then he talked about diamonds. "A diamond is a frozen drop of sunlight," said the priest. "With one diamond as big as your thumb, you could buy the whole land. With a mine of diamonds, your children could sit on thrones."
That night, Ali Hafed went to bed a poor man. He had not lost anything. But he was not happy any more, and so he felt poor. "I want a mine of diamonds," he said, and he could not sleep at all.
Early the next morning, he woke the priest. "Where can I find diamonds?" he asked. The priest said, "Look for a river that runs over white sand between high mountains. You will find diamonds in the white sand."
So Ali Hafed sold his farm. He left his family with a neighbor, and he went away to look for diamonds. He searched in the mountains of Africa. He searched in Palestine. He searched in Europe. Years passed. At last all his money was gone, and his clothes were rags. Far from home, on the coast of Spain, the tired and lonely man died. He never found a single diamond.
But that is not the end of the story. One day, the man who bought Ali Hafed's farm took his camel into the garden to drink. In the small stream, he saw a strange flash of light in the white sand. He picked up a black stone with a bright, rainbow-colored eye. He took it home, put it on a shelf, and forgot about it.
A few days later, the old priest came to visit. As soon as he opened the door, he saw the flash of light. "Here is a diamond!" he cried. "Has Ali Hafed come back?" "No," said the new owner. "And that is not a diamond. It's just a stone from our garden." "I know a diamond when I see one," said the priest.
They ran into the garden and dug in the white sand with their fingers. They found more stones, even more beautiful than the first. According to the old guide, this was how the famous diamond mine of Golconda was found. It is only an old story, of course. If Ali Hafed had stayed at home and dug in his own garden, he would have had acres of diamonds.
Conwell's message is simple. Do not run far away to look for your chance. Your diamonds may be right where you are now, in your own town, your own school, your own work. You only need to look closely and dig.
Try this today. Make a list of three good things you already have: a skill, a friend, a place or a chance. Choose one, and dig a little deeper into it today.
