An old man lived near a big forest. Every day, he cut wood in the forest. Then he carried it on his back to the town and sold it. It was hard work for an old man.
One hot day, he cut a lot of wood and made a very big pile. He tied it up and put it on his back. Then he started the long walk to town.
The sun was hot. The road was long. The wood was very, very heavy. His back hurt, and his legs hurt. After a long time, he stopped.
"I can't go on!" he cried. He threw the wood down on the road and sat next to it. "My life is too hard. I am so tired of it. Oh, Death, please come and take me away!"
Suddenly, the air got cold. A tall shadow stood in front of him. It wore a long dark cloak. "Hello, old man," it said in a deep voice. "I am Death. You called me. What do you want?"
The old man jumped. His eyes got very big. He looked at Death. Then he looked at the wood. "Oh, um... yes," he said quickly. "I called you. Can you help me? Please put this wood back on my back!"
Death looked at him for a moment. Then it laughed a little and was gone.
The old man picked up his wood and walked on to town. The road was still long, and the wood was still heavy. "My life is hard," he said with a smile, "but I still like it!"
