A black crow lived in a big tree. He was often hungry. Near his tree, there was a dove house. Many white doves lived there, and the farmer gave them lots of food every day.
"Those doves eat so well," said the crow. "I want that food too."
Then he had an idea. He found some white paint and painted his black feathers. Soon he was all white, just like a dove. He flew to the dove house.
The doves looked at him. "Are you a dove?" they asked. The crow did not say a word. He only nodded. "Well, come in," they said. So the crow lived with the doves and ate their good food. He was very happy.
But one day, he forgot. He was so happy, and he started to talk. "Caw! Caw! This food is great!" he said in his loud crow voice.
The doves stopped eating. "Doves don't say caw!" they cried. "You are not a dove! You are a crow!" They pecked him and chased him out of the dove house.
The crow flew back to his old tree. "Hello, friends!" he said to the other crows. "I am home!"
But the crows looked at his white feathers. "Who are you?" they said. "You are not a crow. Crows are black. Go away!" And they chased him away too.
Now the poor crow had no home. "I wanted to be two things," he said sadly. "And now I am nothing."
