John James Audubon loved birds more than anything. He lived in America about two hundred years ago. He walked through forests and along rivers, watched wild birds, and drew them. His dream was to draw all the birds of America.
For years he lived in a small town called Henderson, in Kentucky, by the Ohio River. Little by little, he made many drawings. He was very proud of them. They were his treasure.
One day, Audubon had to go on a long business trip to the city of Philadelphia. Before he left, he looked at his drawings one more time. Then he put them carefully in a wooden box. He gave the box to a relative and said, "Please keep this safe. Don't let anything happen to it."
He was away for several months. When he came home, he was happy to see his family again. After a few days, he asked, "Where is my box?" Someone brought the box to him, and he opened it.
He could not believe his eyes. Two rats were living in the box! They chewed up his drawings and made a nest from the paper. There were baby rats in the nest, too. About two hundred drawings, with nearly a thousand birds, were gone.
Audubon's head felt like it was on fire. The pain was too much for him. For several nights he could not sleep well. The days passed like a bad dream. He could not do anything.
But Audubon was strong. After some time, his energy came back. One morning, he picked up his gun, his notebook and his pencils, and he went out into the woods again. He was happy again.
He even found something good in his bad luck. "Now I can make better drawings than before," he thought. He knew much more now than when he drew the first ones. And in less than three years, his collection was full again.
Later, Audubon made a great book, The Birds of America. It had more than four hundred large color pictures of birds. Today, it is one of the most famous and valuable books in the world. Samuel Smiles told this story in his book Self-Help. He wanted to show that a love for your work can help you through even the hardest times.
Try this today. Think about something you lost or something that went wrong. Is there anything good hidden in it? Maybe you can do it again, and do it even better.
