One morning, a man planned a long trip. He wanted an early start, so he got up before the sun.
ある朝、一人の男が長い旅に出かける予定でした。早く出発したかったので、男は日が昇る前に起きました。
But he was very slow. First, he ate a big breakfast. Then he looked for his hat. Then he looked for his shoes. Then he packed his bag, and then he packed it again.
ところが、男はとてものろのろしていました。まず、たっぷり朝ごはんを食べました。それから帽子を探し、それから靴を探しました。それから、かばんに荷物を詰め、さらにもう一度詰め直しました。
His dog sat by the door all morning. He watched his master and waited. He did not bark, and he did not complain. He just waited.
男の犬は、朝からずっと戸口に座っていました。犬は主人を見ながら待っていました。ほえもせず、文句も言いませんでした。ただ、じっと待っていたのです。
At last, the man picked up his bag. He walked to the door. There was his dog. The dog stood up and stretched his legs. He opened his mouth wide in a big yawn.
とうとう、男はかばんを持ち上げて、戸口まで歩いていきました。そこには犬がいました。犬は立ち上がって、足をぐーんと伸ばしました。そして口を大きく開けて、大きなあくびをしました。
"Hey!" said the man sharply. "Why are you yawning? Everything is ready. Only you are not ready! Come on! Hurry up! We are late!"
「おい！」と、男はきつい声で言いました。「なんであくびなんかしているんだ？ 準備はすっかりできているんだぞ。準備ができていないのは、おまえだけだ！ さあ！ 急げ！ 遅れているんだぞ！」
The dog wagged his tail. "Oh, master," he said. "I am ready. I was ready a long time ago. I am waiting for you!"
犬はしっぽを振りました。「ああ、ご主人さま」と、犬は言いました。「わたしは準備ができていますよ。ずっと前から準備ができていたんです。あなたを待っていたんですよ！」
The man stopped. He looked at the sun. It was already high in the sky. He looked at his bag. He thought about his slow morning. Then he laughed a little.
男は動きを止めて、太陽を見上げました。太陽は、もう空高く昇っていました。男はかばんを見て、朝から自分がぐずぐずしていたことを思い返しました。それから、ちょっぴり笑いました。
"You are right, my friend," he said. "The slow one is me, not you. Let's go." And the two of them walked out onto the road together.
「おまえの言う通りだな」と、男は言いました。「のろまなのはわたしのほうで、おまえじゃない。さあ、行こう」そして男と犬は、一緒に道へと歩き出しました。
