The most famous origami is the crane. In Japan, the crane is a bird of long life and good luck. People fold one thousand paper cranes and put them on strings. This is called senbazuru. People give them to a sick friend and wish, "Please get well soon." Every year, people also send many paper cranes to Hiroshima with a wish for peace.
Origami is not only a game for children. Scientists use origami ideas, too. With these ideas, they can fold big things, like solar panels for space, into small shapes. Later, the shapes open again.
Would you like to try? Start with an easy one, like a cup or a dog's face. Fold slowly and press each line well. If it goes wrong, just take a new piece of paper and try again.
