Walk down almost any street in Japan, and you will see a vending machine. You can find them in cities, by quiet farms, and even on mountain roads. Japan has more than two million vending machines, and most of them sell drinks.
日本ではほとんどどの通りを歩いても、自動販売機が目に入ります。都会にも、静かな畑のそばにも、山道にまであります。日本には200万台以上の自動販売機があり、そのほとんどが飲み物を売っています。
Why are there so many? One reason is that Japan is a safe country, so people do not often break the machines or steal from them. Also, people are busy. They like to buy a cold drink quickly on a hot day.
なぜこんなに多いのでしょう？ 理由の一つは、日本が安全な国だからです。機械を壊したり、中のお金を盗んだりする人があまりいません。それに、みんな忙しいので、暑い日には冷たい飲み物をさっと買いたいのです。
Look at the prices carefully. Some have a blue label. Blue means "cold." Some have a red label. Red means "hot." In winter, you can buy hot tea, hot coffee, and even hot corn soup in a can! The can can be very hot, so hold it carefully.
値段のところをよく見てください。青いラベルのものがあります。青は「つめたい」という意味です。赤いラベルのものもあります。赤は「あたたかい」という意味です。冬には温かいお茶やコーヒー、さらには温かいコーンスープの缶まで買えます！ 缶はとても熱いことがあるので、気をつけて持ちましょう。
Many machines sell more than drinks. Some sell ice cream, bread, flowers, or umbrellas. People love to find strange machines and take pictures of them.
飲み物以外のものを売っている機械もたくさんあります。アイスクリーム、パン、花、傘を売る機械まであります。変わった自動販売機を見つけて写真を撮るのは、多くの人の楽しみです。
Vending machines can help people, too. Some machines give free drinks after a big earthquake. Some machines show their address on a sticker. In an emergency, you can call the police or an ambulance, read the address, and tell them where you are.
自動販売機は、人を助けることもあります。大きな地震のあとに、飲み物を無料で出す機械があります。住所を書いたシールがはってある機械もあります。緊急のときに警察や救急車を呼んだら、その住所を読み上げれば、自分のいる場所を伝えられるのです。
Here is a tip. Most machines take coins and 1,000-yen bills. Many also take train cards or smartphones. Do not forget your drink at the bottom of the machine!
ひとつアドバイスです。たいていの機械は、硬貨と千円札が使えます。交通系のカードやスマートフォンが使える機械も多くあります。機械の下に出てきた飲み物を取り忘れないでくださいね！
