It is eleven at night. You are hungry, and it is raining. What can you do? In Japan, the answer is easy. Go to a konbini!
Konbini means "convenience store." There are more than fifty thousand konbini in Japan. In big cities, you can often see two or three from one street corner. Most of them are open twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year.
What can you buy there? You can buy onigiri, sandwiches, bento lunch boxes, hot coffee, ice cream, and snacks. In winter, you can buy hot oden from a big pot near the counter. The clerk can also heat your bento in a microwave. Just say "Yes, please" when they ask.
But a konbini is not only a food store. You can pay your bills there. You can get money from a machine, send a package, make copies, and buy concert tickets. Some people say a konbini is like a small town office!
When you go in, the clerk says, "Irasshaimase!" This means "Welcome!" You do not need to answer. A small smile or a nod is fine.
The big konbini chains came to Japan in the 1970s. Now many visitors say the konbini is one of their favorite places in Japan. Some even buy konbini snacks as gifts to take home.
