In November, you may see small children in kimono at a shrine. Their parents and grandparents are with them, and everyone has a camera. What is happening? It is Shichi-Go-San!
Shichi-Go-San means "seven, five, three." It is a special day for children of these ages. Girls celebrate when they are three and seven. Boys celebrate when they are five, and in some places, three too.
The day is November 15. But today many families go on a weekend near that day. They visit a shrine and pray. They say thank you because the children are growing up well. They also wish for a long, happy life.
Why these ages? Long ago, many children got sick and died young. So families were very happy when a child reached three, five, or seven. Each age also had an old custom. For example, at three, children started to let their hair grow long.
Children get a special candy called chitose-ame. It means "thousand-year candy." It is long, thin, red and white. It comes in a bag with pictures of cranes and turtles. They are symbols of long life. The long candy is a wish for a long life, too.
Many children do not like walking in kimono and wooden shoes! So families often take photos at a photo studio, too. For some little ones, smiling for the camera is the hardest part of the day.
How to explain it in English: "Shichi-Go-San is a festival for children aged three, five, and seven. Around November 15, families visit a shrine to pray for the children's health. The children wear kimono and get long candy for a long life."
