A young fawn lived in the forest with his mother. His mother was a big, beautiful deer. She had long legs and tall, strong horns.
One day, the fawn looked at his mother. He had a question. "Mother," he said, "you are bigger than a dog. You are faster than a dog. You can run all day. And you have big horns on your head. So why are you afraid of dogs?"
His mother smiled. "You are right, my son," she said. "I am big. I am fast. I have strong horns. All that is true."
"Then you can fight the dogs!" said the fawn. "You can win!"
Just then, far away in the forest, a dog barked. Woof! Woof!
The mother deer's ears went up. Her legs began to shake. "Run!" she cried. And she ran away as fast as she could, with the little fawn behind her.
Later, they stopped by a quiet stream. The mother was still breathing hard. "You see, my son," she said, "I know all those things. But I hear a dog, and my heart is full of fear. I can't help it. I just run."
The little fawn did not say anything. He only stayed close to his mother and drank some cool water from the stream.
