In the early 1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union were rivals in the Cold War. They did not fight each other with guns, but they competed in almost everything, including space.
At first, the Soviet Union was winning. In 1957, it sent the first satellite into space. In 1961, a Soviet pilot named Yuri Gagarin became the first person to travel around the Earth. Many Americans were worried.
President John F. Kennedy decided on a bold goal. In 1961, he asked Congress to help send an American to the Moon and bring him home safely before the end of the 1960s.
On September 12, 1962, Kennedy gave a speech at Rice University in Houston, Texas. It was a very hot day. Tens of thousands of people were in the football stadium.
Kennedy explained why the Moon was so important. He said: "We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard." Hard goals, he said, help us use the very best of our energy and skills.
He also made the crowd laugh. Rice was a small school, but it played football against the much bigger University of Texas. He asked, "Why does Rice play Texas?" People climb high mountains and fly across oceans for the same reason, he said. They do it because it is a challenge.
The goal was very difficult. The big rockets were not built yet. Some of the materials did not even exist. Thousands of engineers and scientists worked for years. In 1967, three astronauts died in a fire during a test. It was a terrible loss.
Kennedy did not live to see the Moon landing. He was killed in November 1963. But on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon. Kennedy's goal came true, just before the decade ended.
Today, people still remember this speech. It reminds us that choosing something hard is not foolish. It is often the way people grow.
