On June 12, 2005, thousands of students and their families sat in the sun at Stanford University in California. It was graduation day. The speaker was Steve Jobs, the head of Apple. But Jobs did not have a college degree himself.
Jobs began with a joke. He said that this was the closest he had ever been to a college graduation. Then he told the students that he only wanted to tell them three stories.
The first story was about connecting the dots. When Jobs was young, he started college, but he dropped out after six months. He had very little money. He slept on the floor of friends' rooms. Once a week, he walked a long way across town to get a free dinner at a temple.
Because he was no longer a regular student, he could go to any class he liked. He went to a class on calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing. It did not seem useful at all. But ten years later, when he was making the first Macintosh computer, he remembered what he had learned. The Mac became the first popular computer with beautiful letters.
When you are living your life, he explained, you cannot see how the pieces will fit together. You can only see it later, when you look back. So you have to trust that the small dots in your life will connect someday.
The second story was about love and loss. Jobs started Apple with a friend in his parents' garage when he was twenty. The company grew very fast. But when he was thirty, he was fired from the company he had started. He felt like a failure.
Still, he loved his work. He started a new company called NeXT. He also bought a small computer graphics group, and it became the company Pixar. Pixar made Toy Story, the first movie made fully with computers. Later, Apple bought NeXT, and Jobs went back to Apple. He said that being fired was one of the best things that ever happened to him.
The third story was about death. A year before the speech, doctors had told him he had cancer. He told the students that remembering death helps you see what is really important. Your time is short, he said, so do not waste it living the life that someone else wants for you.
At the end, he shared four words from the back cover of an old magazine that he loved as a young man: "Stay hungry. Stay foolish." He wished the same for the students.
Jobs died in 2011. His speech has been watched by millions of people online. Many people find hope in it because it is honest. It talks about failure, not only success.
