In August 2018, a fifteen-year-old girl sat alone outside the parliament building in Stockholm, Sweden. Next to her was a hand-painted sign. It said that she was on a school strike for the climate. Her name was Greta Thunberg.
Greta first learned about climate change when she was about eight years old. As she learned more, she was shocked that adults were not doing more to stop it. So she decided to act. Instead of going to class, she sat outside the parliament to ask the leaders to take action.
At first, she was alone. People walked past her. But soon, other students joined her. Photos of her spread on the internet. Within a year, millions of young people in many countries were walking out of school on Fridays. The movement was called Fridays for Future.
In 2019, Greta was invited to speak at a United Nations meeting about climate in New York. But she did not want to fly, because airplanes produce a lot of carbon dioxide. So she crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a racing sailboat. The trip took about two weeks.
On September 23, 2019, she stood in front of leaders from around the world. She was sixteen. Her voice was shaking with emotion. She told them that she should not be there. She should be back at school, on the other side of the ocean.
Then she said the words that people remember most: "How dare you!" She was angry that leaders kept talking about money and economic growth, while people were suffering and nature was in danger. She said that they were stealing young people's dreams with empty words. She warned them that young people were watching them.
Her speech was only about five minutes long, but it was shown on news programs all over the world. Many people praised her courage. Others criticized her. Some said she was too emotional. Others said that the problem was more complicated than she said.
Whether people agreed with her or not, Greta made millions of people talk about climate change. She showed that one young person with a clear message can make the whole world stop and listen.
