After World War Two, Germany was divided into two countries. West Germany was close to the United States. East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union. The city of Berlin was inside East Germany, but the city itself was also divided into East and West.
Many people escaped from the East to the West, looking for freedom and a better life. So in 1961, East Germany built a wall through the middle of Berlin. Families and friends were separated overnight. Over the years, many people died while trying to cross the wall.
On June 12, 1987, US President Ronald Reagan visited West Berlin. He spoke in front of the Brandenburg Gate, a famous old gate standing right by the wall. Behind him, on the other side, was East Berlin.
At that time, the leader of the Soviet Union was Mikhail Gorbachev. He was making changes in his country and talking about more openness. Reagan wanted to see if these changes were real.
Some of Reagan's advisers did not like one line in the speech. They thought it was too strong and might make the Soviet Union angry. But Reagan liked the line, and he kept it.
In his speech, Reagan said: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" The crowd cheered loudly.
At the time, the speech did not get much attention. The wall still stood. But two years later, on November 9, 1989, after huge protests in East Germany, the border was suddenly opened. People climbed on top of the wall and danced. They broke off pieces with hammers. In 1990, Germany became one country again.
Did Reagan's words bring down the wall? Historians say that many things worked together. There were Gorbachev's changes, the brave protests of the people in East Germany, and the weak economy in the East. But Reagan's words became a famous symbol of that time.
