A big flock of sheep lived on a green hill. They had good friends, the sheepdogs. The dogs were strong and brave. Day and night, they watched the sheep.
緑の丘に、大きなヒツジの群れが暮らしていました。ヒツジたちには、牧羊犬というよい友だちがいました。犬たちは強くて勇かんでした。昼も夜も、犬たちはヒツジたちを見守っていました。
In the forest near the hill, some wolves lived. They were always hungry. They wanted to eat the sheep, but the dogs always barked and chased them away.
丘の近くの森には、オオカミたちが住んでいました。オオカミたちはいつもおなかをすかせていました。ヒツジを食べたかったのですが、いつも犬たちがほえて、追いはらってしまうのでした。
One day, the wolves had a plan. They came to the edge of the field and smiled a big smile. "Hello, dear sheep!" they called. "Why do we always fight? We want to be your friends!"
ある日、オオカミたちは計画を立てました。オオカミたちは野原のはずれまでやって来て、にっこりと満面の笑みをうかべました。「こんにちは、ヒツジのみなさん！」と、オオカミたちは呼びかけました。「どうしてわたしたちは、いつもけんかばかりしているんでしょう？ わたしたちは、みなさんと友だちになりたいんです！」
The sheep listened. "Friends?" they said.
ヒツジたちは耳をかたむけました。「友だち？」と、ヒツジたちは言いました。
"Yes!" said the wolves. "But those dogs are the problem. They bark at us. They bite us. We never do anything bad, but they always attack us. Send the dogs away, and we can live together in peace."
「そうです！」と、オオカミたちは言いました。「でも、あの犬たちが問題なんです。わたしたちにほえかかる。かみつく。わたしたちは何も悪いことをしていないのに、いつもおそいかかってくる。犬たちを追い出してください。そうすれば、わたしたちは仲よく一緒に暮らせますよ」
The sheep talked together. "The wolves look friendly," said one. "And peace is nice," said another. "Those dogs are so noisy," said a third.
ヒツジたちは話し合いました。「オオカミたちは親切そうだね」と、一ぴきが言いました。「それに、平和っていいものよ」と、別の一ぴきが言いました。「あの犬たちって、ほんとうにうるさいし」と、三びき目が言いました。
So the sheep said to the dogs, "Please go away. We don't need you anymore." The dogs were sad, but they left.
そこでヒツジたちは、犬たちに言いました。「どうか出ていってください。もうあなたたちはいりません」犬たちは悲しみましたが、去っていきました。
That night, the wolves came back. No dogs barked. No dogs chased them. The wolves were not friendly now. They ran at the sheep with big hungry mouths. The poor sheep cried for their dogs, but the dogs were far away. Very few sheep were safe that night.
その夜、オオカミたちがもどってきました。ほえる犬はいません。追いかけてくる犬もいません。オオカミたちは、もう親切ではありませんでした。腹ぺこの大きな口を開けて、ヒツジたちにおそいかかったのです。かわいそうなヒツジたちは犬たちを呼んで泣きさけびましたが、犬たちははるか遠くにいました。その夜、助かったヒツジはほんのわずかでした。
