A rich man had a fine horse. He also had a groom. The groom's job was to take care of the horse.
Every day, the groom brushed the horse for hours. He brushed his back. He brushed his legs. He brushed his long tail. He washed him and made his coat shine.
But the groom had a secret. Every night, he took the horse's oats. He put them in a big bag and sold them at the market. Then he put the money in his own pocket. So the horse got only a little food.
Day after day, the horse got thinner. His legs got weak. His head hung low. But the groom brushed him more and more. "Look at you!" he said. "So shiny! So beautiful!"
One morning, the groom came with his brush again. The horse looked at him with tired eyes.
"Please stop," said the horse. "You brush me all day. You make me shiny. But I am so hungry! Do you really want a good, strong horse? Then brush me less, and feed me more!"
The groom's face turned red. He had nothing to say. That night, the bag of oats stayed in the horse's stable.
