An old house had many, many mice. They ran around the kitchen and ate the bread and cheese. One day, a hungry cat came to the house. "What a lot of mice!" she said. "This is the place for me."
ある古い家に、たくさん、たくさんのネズミがいました。ネズミたちは台所を走り回って、パンやチーズを食べていました。ある日、おなかをすかせたネコが、その家にやって来ました。「なんてたくさんのネズミでしょう！」と、ネコは言いました。「ここは、わたしにぴったりの場所だわ」
Every day, the cat caught a mouse. The mice were very scared. "We must hide!" they said. So they all stayed in their little holes in the wall. They did not come out at all.
ネコは毎日、ネズミを一匹ずつ捕まえました。ネズミたちはすっかり怖くなりました。「隠れなくちゃ！」と、ネズミたちは言いました。そこで、みんな壁の小さな穴の中に閉じこもり、まったく外に出てこなくなりました。
The cat waited and waited. No mice came out. She got hungrier and hungrier. "I need a trick," she thought.
ネコは待って、待って、待ち続けました。ネズミは一匹も出てきません。ネコはどんどんおなかがすいてきました。「何か手を考えなくちゃ」と、ネコは思いました。
Then she had an idea. She jumped up high and caught a hook on the wall with her back legs. She hung there upside down. She closed her eyes and did not move. "The mice will think I am dead," she said to herself. "Then they will come out, and I can catch them!"
そのとき、ネコはいいことを思いつきました。高く跳び上がって、壁のフックに後ろ足を引っかけ、さかさまにぶら下がったのです。目を閉じて、ぴくりとも動きません。「ネズミたちは、わたしが死んだと思うでしょう」と、ネコは心の中でつぶやきました。「そうしたら出てくるだろうから、捕まえてやるわ！」
After some time, an old mouse looked out of his hole. He saw the cat on the wall. Her eyes were closed. Her body did not move. Her tail hung down like a rope.
しばらくして、年寄りのネズミが穴から顔を出しました。壁にネコがぶら下がっているのが見えます。目は閉じています。体は動きません。しっぽはロープのようにだらりとたれていました。
The other mice were excited. "Is she dead?" they whispered. "Can we go out now?"
ほかのネズミたちはわくわくしてきました。「死んでるのかな？」と、ネズミたちはささやきました。「もう外に出てもいいかな？」
But the old mouse was wise. He called to the cat in a loud voice. "Good try, Mrs. Cat! You can hang there all day. You can even turn into a bag of flour. But we are not coming out!"
けれども、年寄りのネズミは賢いネズミでした。年寄りネズミは、大きな声でネコに呼びかけました。「なかなかの作戦ですな、ネコの奥さん！ 一日中そこにぶら下がっていてもかまいませんよ。小麦粉の袋に化けたってかまいません。でも、わたしたちは出ていきませんからね！」
The cat opened one eye. She was very angry. Her trick did not work. The mice stayed safe in their holes, and the cat stayed hungry.
ネコは片目を開けました。かんかんに怒っていました。たくらみはうまくいかなかったのです。ネズミたちは穴の中で無事に過ごし、ネコはおなかをすかせたままでした。
