A deer got sick. He felt weak and tired, so he lay down in a quiet corner of his field. Next to him, there was a big pile of grass and leaves. "I can eat this food slowly," he thought. "Then I can get well again."
The news went around the forest. "The deer is sick!" said the animals. Soon his friends came to visit him.
First came three rabbits. "Oh, poor deer," they said. "We are so sorry." Then they looked at his pile of food. "Mmm, that grass looks good." And they ate some.
Then came a family of goats. "Get well soon!" they said. And they ate some leaves.
Then came two big cows. "How are you, old friend?" they asked. And they ate a lot of grass.
All day long, friends came and went. Everyone was kind. Everyone said nice things. And everyone ate a little of his food.
In the evening, the deer looked at his pile. It was gone. There was not one leaf left. He was weak, and he could not walk far to find more food.
"Oh dear," said the deer sadly. "My sickness is not my biggest problem. My friends are!" And the poor deer got thinner and weaker every day.
