About one hundred and sixty years ago, a boy named Sakichi was born in a small village in Shizuoka. His father was a carpenter. His family was not rich.
In his village, women made cloth on a loom. A loom is a machine for making cloth. They moved their hands and feet again and again. Clack, clack, clack. It is said that Sakichi often watched his mother working at the loom until late at night.
Her work was slow and very hard. Sakichi wanted to make it easier. So he began to think about looms all day.
One day, he read a book about great people. They worked hard and changed the world. The book made him want to invent something useful for Japan.
Sakichi took looms apart. He made new parts from wood. Many times, his ideas did not work. Some people in the village laughed at him. But he did not give up.
When he was twenty-three, he made his first new loom. It was easier and faster. A few years later, he made a loom that used power, not hands. It made cloth much faster.
Sakichi kept working for many more years. In the end, he made a wonderful automatic loom. It could add new thread by itself, without stopping. A company in England paid a lot of money to use his idea.
Some of this money helped his son, Kiichiro. Kiichiro wanted to make cars. That car business later became the company Toyota.
Today, Toyota cars run on roads all over the world. It all began with a boy who wanted to help the women in his village, and his own mother.
