Louis Braille was born in 1809 in a small village near Paris, France. His father made things from leather. Little Louis loved to watch him work.
One day, when Louis was three, he played with a sharp tool in his father's shop. The tool hit his eye. Soon both of his eyes became sick. By the age of five, Louis could not see at all.
But Louis was a bright boy. He wanted to learn. At ten, he went to a special school for blind children in Paris.
The school had books for blind students. The letters were big, and they stood up from the page. Students touched them with their fingers. But the books were very heavy, and reading was slow. The school had only a few books.
When Louis was twelve, a man from the army visited the school. He showed the students a way to write with small raised dots. Soldiers could read it at night, with no light. But it was difficult and used too many dots.
Louis thought he could make it better. He worked on it day and night, even during his holidays at home. At fifteen, he finished his new system. Each letter used six dots or fewer, in a small space. One finger could feel a whole letter at once.
His friends at school loved the dots. They could read fast, and they could write, too! Louis also made dots for music and math. Later, he became a teacher at the same school.
But many adults did not like the new system. For years, the school did not officially accept it. Louis became sick, and he died in 1852, at the age of forty-three. Two years later, the school finally made his dots its official system.
Today, millions of people around the world read braille. In Japan, a teacher made Japanese braille from his idea in 1890. You can find it on handrails at stations, elevator buttons, and even on some cans of drinks. Next time you see small dots, touch them. A boy of fifteen gave the world this gift.
