Rosa Parks was born in 1913 in Alabama, in the south of the United States. At that time, the laws there were not fair to Black people.
Black children and white children went to different schools. Rosa walked to her school, but a bus took the white children to theirs. Black people and white people drank from different water fountains. They even sat in different parts of the bus.
Rosa grew up and got married. She worked as a seamstress in the city of Montgomery. She sewed clothes in a big store. She also worked hard in a group that fought for the rights of Black people.
On December 1, 1955, Rosa finished work and got on a bus. She sat down in the middle part. Soon the bus got full. Then the driver told her to stand up and give her seat to a white man.
Rosa did not stand up. She stayed in her seat. The driver called the police, and they took her to jail.
Many people say she did not move because her feet were tired. But Rosa later said that this was not true. She was tired of being treated unfairly.
Black people in Montgomery were angry. They decided to stop riding the buses. A young pastor, Martin Luther King Jr., helped to lead them. For more than a year, for 381 days, they walked to work or shared cars. Some walked many miles every day.
In 1956, the highest court in the country said that the bus rules were against the law. Now Black people could sit anywhere on the bus.
Rosa Parks lived to the age of ninety-two. When she died in 2005, thousands of people came to say goodbye. Today, many people call her the mother of the civil rights movement. One quiet "no" helped to change a country.
