An old farmer had three sons. The farmer worked hard every day in his vineyard. But his sons were lazy. They liked to sleep and play.
年を取った農夫に、三人の息子がいました。農夫は毎日、ブドウ畑で一生懸命働いていました。でも、息子たちは怠け者でした。寝ることと遊ぶことが好きだったのです。
One day, the old farmer got very sick. He was old and weak, and he could not get up. He called his three sons to his bed.
ある日、年老いた農夫は重い病気になりました。年を取って弱っていたので、起き上がることもできませんでした。農夫は三人の息子を枕元に呼びました。
"My sons," he said in a weak voice, "I have a secret. There is a great treasure in our vineyard. It is under the ground. Dig, and you can find it."
「息子たちよ」と、農夫は弱々しい声で言いました。「秘密があるのだ。わが家のブドウ畑には、素晴らしい宝がある。土の中に埋まっている。掘れば見つかるだろう」
"A treasure!" said the sons. "Where is it, Father? Tell us!" But the old man only smiled and closed his eyes. Soon after that, he died.
「宝だって！」と、息子たちは言いました。「どこにあるの、お父さん？ 教えてよ！」でも、老人はただほほえんで、目を閉じました。それからまもなく、農夫は亡くなりました。
The three sons were very sad. But they did not forget the treasure. "Gold!" said the oldest son. "Maybe silver!" said the second son. "Let's find it!" said the youngest.
三人の息子はとても悲しみました。でも、宝のことは忘れませんでした。「金だ！」と、長男が言いました。「銀かもしれないぞ！」と、次男が言いました。「見つけようよ！」と、末っ子が言いました。
So the next morning, they took their shovels and went to the vineyard. They dug and dug. They dug under every plant. They dug every corner of the land. They worked from morning to night for many days.
そこで次の朝、三人はシャベルを持ってブドウ畑へ行きました。三人は掘って、掘って、掘りまくりました。ブドウの木の一本一本の下を掘りました。畑の隅々まで掘りました。何日ものあいだ、朝から晩まで働き続けたのです。
But they found no gold. They found no silver. They found only stones and worms. "There is no treasure," they said. "Father tricked us."
でも、金は見つかりませんでした。銀も見つかりませんでした。出てきたのは、石ころとミミズだけでした。「宝なんかないんだ」と、三人は言いました。「お父さんはぼくたちをだましたんだ」
Then summer came. The grapevines grew and grew. The soil was soft, so the roots were strong and healthy. That autumn, the vines gave the biggest, sweetest grapes in the village. The sons sold them and got a lot of money.
やがて夏が来ました。ブドウのつるはぐんぐん伸びました。土が柔らかくなっていたので、根は丈夫で元気だったのです。その秋、ブドウのつるには、村でいちばん大きくて甘いブドウが実りました。息子たちはそれを売って、たくさんのお金を手に入れました。
The oldest son smiled. "Now I understand," he said. "Hard work was Father's treasure."
長男はにっこりしました。「やっとわかったよ」と、長男は言いました。「一生懸命働くこと、それがお父さんの宝だったんだ」
