Late one night, a wolf went to a farm. Very quietly, he went into the sheep house. He took a little lamb and ran away into the forest. "Ha! Dinner tonight!" he said.
ある夜遅く、オオカミが農場へ行きました。足音を忍ばせてヒツジ小屋に入りこむと、小さな子ヒツジを一頭くわえて、森の中へ逃げていきました。「しめた！ 今夜はごちそうだ！」と、オオカミは言いました。
But on the forest path, he met a big lion. The lion stood in the middle of the path. "Good evening," said the lion. "What is that in your mouth?"
ところが森の小道で、オオカミは大きなライオンに出会いました。ライオンは道の真ん中に立っていました。「こんばんは」と、ライオンは言いました。「口にくわえているそれは何だね？」
The wolf did not answer. Then the lion jumped. He took the lamb away from the wolf and held it under his big paw.
オオカミは答えませんでした。すると、ライオンが飛びかかりました。オオカミから子ヒツジを奪い取って、大きな前足の下に押さえこんだのです。
The wolf ran to a big rock. He stood on top of it, far from the lion. He was angry, but he was also afraid. "Hey!" he shouted. "That is not fair! You took my lamb! That lamb is mine!"
オオカミは、ライオンから遠く離れた大きな岩まで走っていき、そのてっぺんに立ちました。腹が立ちましたが、怖くもありました。「おい！」と、オオカミは叫びました。「そんなのずるいぞ！ おれの子ヒツジを取ったな！ その子ヒツジはおれのものだ！」
The lion laughed a big laugh. "Yours?" he said. "Really? Where did you get it? Did you buy it at the market? Was it a present from a friend? Did the farmer give it to you?"
ライオンは大声で笑いました。「おまえのものだと？」と、ライオンは言いました。「本当かね？ どこで手に入れたんだ？ 市場で買ったのか？ 友だちからの贈り物か？ 農夫がおまえにくれたのか？」
The wolf opened his mouth, but no words came out. He had no answer.
オオカミは口を開けましたが、言葉が出てきませんでした。答えられなかったのです。
"I thought so," said the lion. "You stole it. So don't talk to me about fair!" And he laughed and laughed.
「そうだろうと思ったよ」と、ライオンは言いました。「おまえは盗んだんだ。だから、わたしに向かって、ずるいだのなんだのと言うんじゃない！」そう言って、ライオンは笑いに笑いました。
The lion laughed so hard that he lifted his paw. The little lamb saw its chance. It jumped up and ran all the way home to the farm. And the wolf and the lion both had no dinner that night.
ライオンはあんまり大笑いしたので、思わず前足を上げてしまいました。小さな子ヒツジは、そのすきを逃しませんでした。跳び起きて、農場までずっと走って帰ったのです。そしてその夜、オオカミもライオンも、夕ごはんにありつけませんでした。
