A frog lived in a muddy pond. One day, he had a big idea. "I can be a doctor!" he said. "A famous doctor!"
泥だらけの池に、カエルが住んでいました。ある日、カエルはすごいことを思いつきました。「ぼくはお医者さんになれるぞ！」と、カエルは言いました。「有名なお医者さんに！」
He hopped out of the pond and went to the forest. He stood on a big stump and shouted to all the animals. "Come here, everyone! I am a great doctor! I know all about medicine. I can cure every sickness in the world!"
カエルは池からぴょんと出て、森へ行きました。そして大きな切り株の上に立って、動物たちに向かって叫びました。「みなさん、お集まりください！ わたしはえらいお医者さんです！ 薬のことなら何でも知っています。世界中のどんな病気でも治せますよ！」
Many animals came to listen. A rabbit came. A deer came. A bear came too.
たくさんの動物たちが、話を聞きにやって来ました。ウサギが来ました。シカが来ました。クマも来ました。
"My doctor's bag is full of wonderful medicine," said the frog. "Do you have a cough? I can stop it. Is your leg sore? I can fix it. Come to me, and I can make you well!"
「わたしのお医者さんのかばんには、素晴らしい薬がいっぱい詰まっています」と、カエルは言いました。「せきが出ますか？ 止めてあげましょう。足が痛みますか？ 治してあげましょう。わたしのところへ来れば、元気にしてあげますよ！」
The animals looked at each other. "A doctor?" said the rabbit. "Wow!"
動物たちは顔を見合わせました。「お医者さんだって？」と、ウサギが言いました。「すごい！」
But then a fox came out of the trees. He looked at the frog for a long time. He looked at his legs. He looked at his skin.
ところがそのとき、キツネが木々のあいだから出てきました。キツネは長いあいだ、カエルをじっと見ていました。足を見て、皮膚を見ました。
"Excuse me, Doctor," said the fox. "You can cure every sickness? Then why do you walk like that? Your legs are bent, and you can't walk. You only hop. And look at your skin! It is green and full of wrinkles. Cure yourself first, Doctor. Then we can believe you."
「失礼ですが、先生」と、キツネは言いました。「どんな病気でも治せるんですって？ それなら、どうしてそんな歩き方をしているんです？ 足は曲がっていて、歩けないじゃありませんか。ぴょんぴょん跳ねることしかできないでしょう。それに、その皮膚を見てごらんなさい！ 緑色で、しわだらけですよ。まずはご自分を治しなさい、先生。そうしたら、わたしたちもあなたを信じますよ」
All the animals laughed. The frog's face turned even greener. He hopped back to his pond and did not come out for a long time.
動物たちはみんな笑いました。カエルの顔は、ますます緑色になりました。カエルはぴょんぴょんと池に戻り、長いあいだ出てきませんでした。
