A boy loved catching grasshoppers. One summer day, he went to a big green field with a jar. "Today I can catch a lot!" he said.
Jump! A grasshopper jumped in the grass. The boy caught it and put it in his jar. Jump! Another one. He caught that one too. By lunchtime, his jar was full of green grasshoppers. He was very proud.
Then he saw something on a rock. It was brown, and it had many legs. "Oh, another grasshopper!" he thought. "A big one!" He reached out his hand.
But it was not a grasshopper. It was a scorpion! It lifted its long tail. At the end of the tail, there was a sharp stinger.
"Stop!" said the scorpion. "Look carefully, my friend. Touch me, and I will sting you. Then you will lose me, and you will lose all your grasshoppers too!"
The boy pulled back his hand very fast. His heart beat hard. He held his jar tight. "Thank you, Mr. Scorpion," he said in a small voice.
The scorpion put down its tail and walked away under the rock.
The boy walked home slowly with his jar. On the way, he looked very carefully at every little animal in the grass. "A grasshopper is a grasshopper," he said. "But not every brown thing with legs is a grasshopper!"
