Once upon a time, a bear named Winnie-the-Pooh lived in a forest. His friend was a boy called Christopher Robin.
One day, Pooh was walking through the forest when he heard a loud buzzing sound. It came from the top of a tall tree. Pooh sat down and thought.
"That buzzing means something," he said to himself. "If there's a buzzing noise, somebody is making it. The only reason for making a buzzing noise is that you're a bee. And the only reason for being a bee is making honey. And the only reason for making honey is so that I can eat it!"
So Pooh began to climb the tree. He climbed and climbed, and he sang a little song as he went. But near the top, a branch broke. "Oh, help!" said Pooh, as he fell down, down, down, and landed in a prickly bush.
Pooh crawled out of the bush and thought again. Then he went to see Christopher Robin.
"Have you got a balloon?" Pooh asked. "I have two," said Christopher Robin. "A green one and a blue one. But what do you want a balloon for?"
"Honey," whispered Pooh. "I shall fly up to the honey with the balloon. Then I will pretend to be a little black rain cloud. The bees won't notice me." He rolled in some mud until he was black all over. Then he held onto the blue balloon, because blue was like the sky. Up he went, high into the air, until he was right next to the bees' nest.
But the bees were not stupid. They began to fly around him in a worried way. "Christopher Robin!" Pooh called down. "I think the bees suspect something. Could you please open your umbrella and walk up and down, and say, 'Tut-tut, it looks like rain'? It will help."
So Christopher Robin walked up and down under the tree with his umbrella, saying, "Tut-tut, it looks like rain." Pooh sang a little cloud song. But more and more bees came out of the nest, and one of them sat on Pooh's nose.
"Christopher Robin," Pooh said, "I have decided something. These are the wrong sort of bees. They make the wrong sort of honey. I want to come down now. Could you shoot the balloon with your gun?"
Christopher Robin aimed very carefully and fired. "Ow!" said Pooh. "You missed the balloon. You hit me!" "I'm so sorry," said Christopher Robin. He fired again, and this time he hit the balloon. The air slowly came out, and Pooh floated down to the ground.
But Pooh had held the string of the balloon for so long that his arms stayed straight up in the air for more than a week. Whenever a fly came and sat on his nose, he had to blow it off. "Pooh!" And some people say that is why he was called Pooh.
Christopher Robin laughed and said, "Silly old Bear." But he said it in a very kind way, because Pooh was his best friend.
