The train was going east from Denver. In one of the cars sat a beautiful young woman in elegant clothes. Her name was Miss Fairchild. She was looking out of the window at the wide, empty land.
At a small station, two men got on the train. One was a handsome young man with a bold, open face. He was neatly dressed. The other was a heavy, unhappy-looking man in rough clothes. The two men were joined together by handcuffs. The handsome man's right hand was locked to the other man's left hand.
The only empty seat was across from Miss Fairchild, so the two men sat down there. Miss Fairchild looked at them. Then her face lit up with a lovely smile.
"Why, Mr. Easton!" she said, and she held out her hand. "Did you forget your old friends?"
The young man looked surprised and a little uncomfortable. Then he smiled. He tried to take her hand with his right hand, but the handcuffs stopped him. So he took it with his left hand.
"Of course I remember you, Miss Fairchild," he said. "Please excuse the other hand. It's busy just now."
Then Miss Fairchild saw the shining handcuffs. Her smile disappeared, and her eyes grew wide.
The heavy man spoke first. He was watching her face carefully. "Excuse me, miss," he said. "I see you know the marshal here. Please ask him to say a good word for me. He's taking me to the prison in Leavenworth. I made fake money, and I'm going to be there for seven years."
"Oh!" said Miss Fairchild, and the color came back to her cheeks. "So you're a marshal now, Mr. Easton!"
"Yes," said Easton calmly. "I needed a job, you know. Money doesn't come easily. When I left Washington, I came out West. A marshal's job isn't as fine as a job at the embassy, but..."
"I don't care about the embassy anymore," said Miss Fairchild warmly. "And now you're a brave Western hero, catching bad men! How exciting! Mother and I often talk about you. We have missed you in Washington."
They talked about old friends for a while. Then the heavy man said, "Excuse me, miss. I think the marshal wants a smoke, and so do I. I didn't smoke all day. Can we go to the smoking car, marshal?"
The two men stood up, still joined together. "I'm sorry, but I must go with my friend here," said Easton with a smile. He looked at her for a long moment. "Good-bye, Miss Fairchild. Give my best wishes to your mother."
"I hope we will meet again," she said softly. "Good-bye."
After they left, two passengers in the next seat began to talk. They had heard everything.
"That marshal is a nice young man," said one. "Some of those Western officers are good fellows."
"He's rather young for a marshal, isn't he?" said the other.
"Young?" said the first man. "Didn't you notice? Tell me, did you ever see an officer lock a prisoner to his own right hand?"
