Long ago, before America was a free country, there was a little Dutch village at the foot of the Catskill Mountains. In this village lived a kind and easygoing man called Rip Van Winkle.
Everybody loved Rip. He helped his neighbors with their work. He played games with the children and told them stories. But Rip had one big problem. He did not like to work on his own farm.
"The fence is falling down! The cows are eating the garden!" his wife shouted every day. "You are a lazy, good-for-nothing man!" Rip only shrugged. Then he walked out of the house with his dog, Wolf.
One fine autumn day, Rip took his gun and went up into the mountains with Wolf. In the evening he sat down to rest. "It's getting late," he said. "My wife will be angry again."
Just then he heard a voice. "Rip Van Winkle! Rip Van Winkle!" A strange little old man was coming up the rocks. He had a thick beard and wore very old Dutch clothes. On his back he was carrying a heavy barrel.
Rip helped him carry the barrel up the mountain. As they climbed, Rip heard a sound like thunder. At last they came to a hollow among the rocks. There, a group of odd little men were playing ninepins. When their heavy balls rolled, they made the sound of thunder.
The men did not speak or smile. They only looked at Rip with serious faces, and Rip felt afraid. The old man poured drinks from the barrel, and the men drank in silence. When nobody was looking, Rip tasted the drink too. It was very good, so he drank again and again. Soon his eyes closed, and he fell into a deep sleep.
When Rip woke up, it was a bright morning. "Did I sleep here all night?" he thought. "What will my wife say?" He looked for his gun. Next to him lay an old gun covered with rust. Wolf was gone.
He walked down to the village, but everything was different. There were new houses and many strangers. People pointed at his chin and laughed. Rip touched his face. His beard was white and very long! His own house was empty, and the roof had fallen in.
At the inn, men were talking loudly about an election. One of them asked Rip, "Who are you going to vote for?" "I am a loyal man of the King!" said Rip. "A spy! A spy!" the men shouted.
Rip asked about his old friends. "Where is Nicholas Vedder?" "He died eighteen years ago," someone answered. "And Brom Dutcher?" "He went away to the war." "Does anyone here know Rip Van Winkle?" he asked. "Of course," they said. "There he is, by the tree." Rip looked. A lazy young man was standing there. He looked just like Rip when he was young!
Then a young woman came by with a baby in her arms. "What is your name?" Rip asked her. "Judith," she said. "My father was Rip Van Winkle. Twenty years ago he went into the mountains with his gun, and he never came home." "I am your father!" cried Rip.
An old woman looked closely at his face. "It is Rip Van Winkle!" she said. "Welcome home, neighbor!"
Rip told his story. Some people laughed, but the oldest man in the village nodded. "My father saw those little men too," he said. "They are the ghosts of Henry Hudson's sailors. Every twenty years they come back to the mountains to play ninepins."
Rip went to live with his daughter. While he was asleep, his wife had died, and America had become a new country. He sat at the inn every day and told his story to everyone. And when thunder rolled over the mountains, the children said, "Listen! Henry Hudson's men are playing ninepins again!"
