High above the city stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was covered with thin leaves of gold. His eyes were two bright blue sapphires, and a large red ruby shone on his sword.
One night a little Swallow flew over the city. His friends were already in Egypt, but he was late. "I will sleep between the feet of the Happy Prince," he said. Then a large drop of water fell on him. The Swallow looked up. The eyes of the Happy Prince were full of tears.
"Why are you crying?" asked the Swallow. "When I was alive, I lived in a palace," said the Prince. "I never saw sadness there. Now I stand up here, and I can see all the sadness of my city. My heart is made of lead, but still I cannot stop crying."
"Far away there is a poor house," the Prince went on. "A woman is sewing by the window. Her little boy is ill in bed, and he is asking for oranges. But she has only river water to give him. Swallow, little Swallow, will you take her the ruby from my sword?"
"My friends are waiting for me in Egypt," said the Swallow. But the Prince looked so sad. "All right. I will stay with you one night." So he took the ruby in his beak and flew over the roofs. He put it on the woman's table and cooled the sick boy with his wings.
The next night the Prince said, "Swallow, stay with me one more night. I see a young man in a cold room. He is trying to finish a play, but he is too cold and hungry to write. My eyes are all that I have now. Take one of them to him." The Swallow cried, but he did it. The young man found the sapphire. "Someone likes my work!" he said happily.
The next night the Swallow came to say goodbye. "It is winter," he said. "In the square below stands a little match girl," said the Prince. "Her matches fell in the water. She has no shoes, and her father will be angry. Take out my other eye and give it to her." "Then you will be blind," said the Swallow. But he did it, and the girl ran home laughing.
"You are blind now," said the Swallow, "so I will stay with you always." He told the Prince about the hungry children in the streets. "Take off my gold, leaf by leaf, and give it to the poor," said the Prince. Leaf after leaf the Swallow took off. The Prince became dull and grey, but the children laughed in the streets.
Then the snow came, and the poor Swallow grew colder and colder. But he did not leave the Prince. He loved him too much. At last he knew that he was going to die. "Goodbye, dear Prince," he whispered. "I am glad you are going to Egypt at last," said the Prince. "No," said the Swallow. "I am going to the House of Death." He kissed the Prince and fell down dead at his feet. At that moment the lead heart inside the statue broke in two.
The next morning the Mayor walked by. "How shabby the Happy Prince looks!" he said. So they pulled down the statue and melted it. But the broken lead heart did not melt. The workers threw it on a pile of trash, where the dead Swallow was also lying.
"Bring me the two most precious things in the city," God said to one of His Angels. The Angel brought Him the lead heart and the dead bird. "You have chosen well," said God. "In my garden of Paradise, this little bird will sing forever, and the Happy Prince will be with me in my city of gold."
