On the same autumn day in London, two boys were born. One was Tom Canty. His family was very poor, and nobody wanted him. The other was Edward Tudor, the son of King Henry the Eighth. All of England wanted him.
Tom lived in a dark, dirty street. His father was a cruel man. He beat Tom when Tom came home with no money. But a kind old priest taught Tom to read, and Tom loved stories about kings and princes. "Someday I want to see a real prince," he dreamed.
One day Tom walked all the way to the palace. He pressed his face against the gates. A guard pushed him away roughly. "Get back, you beggar!" But a young voice shouted, "Stop! How dare you treat a poor boy like that? Open the gates!" It was Prince Edward himself.
The prince took Tom inside and gave him a wonderful meal. "Tell me about your life," said Edward. Tom talked about games in the street and swimming in the river. "Oh, I would love to play like that just once!" said the prince. "Let's change clothes for a minute."
They changed clothes and stood in front of a big mirror. They were very surprised. The two boys looked exactly the same! "Nobody could tell us apart," said Edward. Then he saw a bruise on Tom's hand. "Did the guard do this? Wait here!" He ran out to the gates in Tom's rags.
"Get out, beggar!" said the guard, and he threw the real prince into the street. "I am the Prince of Wales!" Edward shouted. But the people only laughed at him. Then a rough man grabbed his arm. It was John Canty, Tom's father. "Come home, Tom!" he said, and he dragged the prince away.
In the palace, Tom was afraid. "I'm not the prince!" he said. But everybody thought the poor prince was sick in the head. Soon after that, old King Henry died. Now everyone bowed to Tom and called him King. Tom was kind and wise, and he helped people in trouble. But he missed his mother.
Edward ran away from John Canty. He walked through the country in his rags and saw how hard life was for poor people. He saw hungry children and people in prison. A brave soldier named Miles Hendon saved him from a crowd. Miles did not believe that Edward was a king, but he took care of him like a little brother.
Then came the great day. In Westminster Abbey, Tom was going to become King of England. Just before the lords put the crown on his head, a boy in rags ran in. "Stop! I am the King!" Tom saw him and his face lit up. He knelt down. "Yes, he is the true King!" he said.
The lords were confused. "Which boy is the real one?" A wise lord had an idea. "Nobody can find the Great Seal of England. The true King will know where it is." Edward thought hard. "I hid it in a piece of armor in my room!" They looked, and there it was. "Oh, so that's what it was," laughed Tom. "I used it to crack nuts!"
Edward became King Edward the Sixth. He made Miles Hendon an earl, and he gave Tom a good home for life. Edward never forgot what he saw in his rags. "Now I know how my people live," he said. And for all of his short life, he was a fair and kind king.
