Pollyanna was eleven years old, and she was an orphan. Her father and mother were both dead. So she came on the train to the small town of Beldingsville to live with her Aunt Polly.
Aunt Polly was rich, but she was cold and strict. She did not smile very often. "I am doing my duty," she said. She gave Pollyanna a hot little room in the attic. There were no pictures on the walls and no curtains on the window.
But Pollyanna looked out of the window and clapped her hands. "Oh, I can see the mountains and the trees! I'm glad there are no pictures, because the window is better than any picture."
Nancy, the young maid, stared at her. "How can you be glad about everything?"
"It's the glad game," said Pollyanna. "Father taught it to me. Once I wanted a doll very much. But when the box came, there was no doll in it. There was only a pair of little crutches! I cried. Then Father said, 'Be glad, because you don't need them!' Since then, I always look for something to be glad about. The harder it is, the more fun the game is."
Pollyanna played the game all day long. Soon she made friends all over the town. She visited Mrs. Snow, an invalid who complained about everything. Mrs. Snow always wanted the food that she did not have. Pollyanna said, "Well, you can be glad that you have nice hands." Mrs. Snow looked at her own white hands, and for the first time in years, she almost smiled.
Pollyanna also met Mr. Pendleton, a grumpy rich man who lived alone in a big stone house. When he broke his leg, Pollyanna brought him food and talked to him every day. Slowly, he began to laugh again. Later he told her a secret. "Many years ago, I loved your mother," he said quietly.
Pollyanna hung glass prisms in his sunny window. Little rainbows danced on the walls. "Now you have rainbows in your house," she said happily. Soon many people in town were playing the glad game too. They were kinder and happier than before.
Then one day, something terrible happened. Pollyanna was crossing the street when a car hit her. She could not walk any more. The doctor shook his head. For the first time, Pollyanna could not find anything to be glad about. "I can't play the game now," she cried.
But many people came to the house. "Please tell Pollyanna that I am playing the game," said Mrs. Snow. "Tell her that she taught us all to be glad," said a sad man. One by one, they came, and Aunt Polly listened to them with tears in her eyes.
Now Aunt Polly understood what this little girl had done for the town. She sat by the bed and held Pollyanna's hand. "My dear," she said, "I love you. Now I want to learn the game too."
Pollyanna smiled through her tears. "Oh, Aunt Polly! Then I can be glad that I'm here, and that you love me!"
Soon after that, Dr. Chilton came to the house. Long ago, he and Aunt Polly had loved each other, but they had quarreled. Now he said, "I know a doctor in a big hospital who can help her." So Pollyanna went far away to that hospital. Many months later, she wrote a happy letter home. "Dear Aunt Polly, today I walked all the way to the window! I am so glad, glad, glad that I have legs!"
