It was a long trip across the sea from France to New York. Our ship, the Provence, was big and comfortable, and the weather was fine. A young American woman, Miss Nelly Underdown, was on the ship, too. She was beautiful and kind, and I liked to walk on the deck and talk with her.
On the second day, a strange message came to the ship by radio. "Arsène Lupin is on your ship," it said. "He is in first class. He has fair hair. He has a wound on his right arm. He is traveling alone under the name..." Then a storm began, and the rest of the message never came.
Everyone on the ship was excited. Arsène Lupin was the most famous thief in France. He could change his face, his voice and his name. Nobody knew what he really looked like.
"Lupin is here, with us!" said Miss Nelly. "How exciting! Who is he, do you think?" "Perhaps it is me," I said with a smile. She laughed. "You? No. You are much too nice."
All the passengers began to watch each other. Men with fair hair had a hard time. One of them, Mr. Rozaine, had fair hair and was traveling alone. People looked at him angrily. But he showed them his right arm, and there was no wound on it.
Then, one night, Lady Jerland's jewels were stolen from her room. Only a small card was left on the table. On it were the words "Arsène Lupin." Now everyone was afraid. Lupin was really on the ship!
The captain searched the ship, but he found nothing. A few days later, Mr. Rozaine was found on the deck at night, hurt. "I was following a man in the dark," he said. "He attacked me." So Rozaine was not Lupin, after all. But who was?
At last we saw the tall buildings of New York. Miss Nelly and I stood together on the deck. "Will you carry my camera for me?" I asked her. "My hands are full." "Of course," she said.
On the land below, a man was waiting. I knew his face. It was Ganimard, the best police detective in France. He had come all the way to America on a faster ship.
The passengers walked down from the ship one by one. Ganimard looked at every face. When I came near him, he put his hand on my arm, my right arm. I could not stop a small cry of pain.
"Hello, Arsène Lupin," he said quietly. Yes. I was Arsène Lupin, the famous thief.
Miss Nelly's face went white. She looked at me, and then at the camera in her hands. Inside it were the jewels and the money. Now she knew it. Then, without a word, she opened her hand. The camera fell into the water between the ship and the land, and it was gone.
She walked away and did not look back. Ganimard took me away. I was sad, but I was also thankful. She did not help me, but she did not help the police, either. I will never forget her.
