Long ago in the city of Athens, there was a hard law. A girl had to marry the man her father chose. If she did not, she could be put to death.
昔、アテネの都には、厳しいおきてがありました。娘は、父親が選んだ男と結婚しなければならないのです。もし逆らえば、死刑にされることもありました。
A girl named Hermia loved a young man named Lysander. But her father wanted her to marry Demetrius. "Obey your father," said the Duke of Athens, "or you must die. I give you four days to decide."
ハーミアという娘は、ライサンダーという若者を愛していました。ところが父親は、ハーミアをディミートリアスと結婚させたがっていました。「父に従いなさい」とアテネの公爵は言いました。「さもなければ、死なねばならぬ。四日のうちに決めるがよい」
"Let's run away," said Lysander. "My aunt lives far from Athens. The law cannot hurt us there. Meet me tomorrow night in the woods." Hermia agreed. She told only her best friend, Helena.
「逃げよう」とライサンダーは言いました。「ぼくのおばさんが、アテネから遠いところに住んでいるんだ。あそこなら、おきても手出しできない。明日の夜、森で会おう」ハーミアは承知しました。ハーミアはこのことを、いちばんの親友のヘレナにだけ話しました。
Poor Helena loved Demetrius, but he did not love her. "If I tell him about Hermia's plan," she thought, "maybe he will thank me." So she told him. That night, Demetrius ran into the woods after Hermia, and Helena ran after Demetrius.
かわいそうに、ヘレナはディミートリアスを愛していましたが、ディミートリアスはヘレナを愛していませんでした。「ハーミアの計画を教えてあげたら」とヘレナは考えました。「あの人、わたしに感謝してくれるかもしれない」そこでヘレナは、ディミートリアスに話してしまいました。その夜、ディミートリアスはハーミアを追って森へ駆けこみ、ヘレナはディミートリアスを追いかけていきました。
These woods were full of fairies. The fairy king, Oberon, and the fairy queen, Titania, were having a quarrel. Titania had a little boy as her servant, and Oberon wanted the boy for himself. But Titania said no.
この森には、妖精がたくさん住んでいました。妖精の王オーベロンと、妖精の女王タイテーニアは、けんかをしていました。タイテーニアは小さな男の子を召使いにしていましたが、オーベロンはその子を自分のものにしたがっていたのです。けれどもタイテーニアは、いやだと言いました。
Oberon called his servant Puck. Puck was a funny, naughty little fairy who loved tricks. "Bring me a little purple flower," said Oberon. "If you put its juice on the eyelids of a sleeping person, they will love the first thing they see when they wake up." Oberon wanted to play a trick on Titania.
オーベロンは、家来のパックを呼びました。パックは、いたずらが大好きな、ゆかいでやんちゃな小さな妖精です。「小さな紫の花を取ってきておくれ」とオーベロンは言いました。「その汁を、眠っている者のまぶたにぬると、目を覚まして最初に見たものを好きになってしまうのだ」オーベロンは、タイテーニアにいたずらをしかけようと思ったのです。
Then Oberon saw Demetrius in the woods. He was shouting at Helena, "Go away! I don't love you!" Oberon felt sorry for Helena. He told Puck, "There is a young man from Athens in these woods. Put some juice on his eyes too. Make sure he sees the lady first."
そのときオーベロンは、森の中にディミートリアスがいるのを見かけました。ディミートリアスは、ヘレナに向かってどなっていました。「あっちへ行け！ おまえなんか好きじゃない！」オーベロンは、ヘレナがかわいそうになりました。そこでパックに言いました。「この森に、アテネから来た若者がいる。そいつの目にも、汁をぬってやれ。必ず、あの娘を最初に見るようにするのだぞ」
But Puck made a big mistake. He found the wrong young man from Athens. He put the juice on the eyes of Lysander, who was sleeping near Hermia. Just then, Helena came by and woke Lysander up. Lysander looked at her and said, "Oh, Helena! I love you!"
ところが、パックは大きな間違いをしてしまいました。別のアテネの若者を見つけてしまったのです。パックは、ハーミアのそばで眠っていたライサンダーの目に、汁をぬってしまいました。ちょうどそこへヘレナが通りかかり、ライサンダーを起こしました。ライサンダーはヘレナを見て言いました。「ああ、ヘレナ！ 愛している！」
Helena thought that he was laughing at her. "How can you be so cruel?" she cried, and she ran away. Lysander ran after her and left Hermia alone.
ヘレナは、からかわれているのだと思いました。「なんてひどい人なの！」とヘレナは叫んで、走り去りました。ライサンダーはヘレナを追いかけ、ハーミアを一人置き去りにしてしまいました。
Oberon was angry with Puck. He put the juice on the eyes of Demetrius too. Now both young men loved Helena, and nobody loved Hermia! The two men wanted to fight. Hermia was angry with Helena, and Helena was angry with everybody. It was a terrible mess.
オーベロンは、パックに腹を立てました。そして、ディミートリアスの目にも汁をぬりました。こうして、若者は二人ともヘレナを愛するようになり、ハーミアを愛する者は誰もいなくなってしまいました！ 二人の若者は、決闘をしようとしました。ハーミアはヘレナに腹を立て、ヘレナはみんなに腹を立てました。とんでもない大さわぎです。
Meanwhile, Oberon put the juice on the eyes of Titania while she slept. At that time, a foolish man named Bottom was in the woods. Puck gave him a donkey's head for fun. When Titania woke up, the first thing she saw was Bottom. "Oh, how beautiful you are!" she said. She put flowers on his long donkey ears and kissed him.
そのあいだに、オーベロンは、眠っているタイテーニアの目に汁をぬりました。ちょうどそのころ、森にはボトムという、まぬけな男がいました。パックはおもしろがって、ボトムの頭をロバの頭に変えてしまいました。目を覚ましたタイテーニアが最初に見たのは、ボトムでした。「まあ、なんて美しい方！」とタイテーニアは言いました。そして、ロバの長い耳に花を飾り、口づけをしました。
While Titania was busy with Bottom, Oberon asked again for the little boy. This time she gave him the boy at once. Then Oberon felt sorry for her. He took the magic away from her eyes. "Oh, what a strange dream I had!" said Titania. "I loved a donkey!" The king and queen were friends again.
タイテーニアがボトムに夢中になっているあいだに、オーベロンは、もう一度あの男の子をくれと頼みました。今度は、タイテーニアはすぐに男の子を渡してくれました。するとオーベロンは、タイテーニアがかわいそうになりました。そこで、タイテーニアの目の魔法をといてやりました。「まあ、なんて不思議な夢を見たのかしら！」とタイテーニアは言いました。「ロバを好きになるなんて！」こうして王と女王は、また仲直りしました。
Puck took the donkey's head off Bottom. Then he made a thick fog in the woods, so the young people got lost and fell asleep. Puck took the magic away from Lysander's eyes. But he left it on the eyes of Demetrius.
パックは、ボトムの頭をもとに戻してやりました。それから森に深い霧を立ちこめさせて、若者たちを道に迷わせ、眠らせてしまいました。パックは、ライサンダーの目の魔法をときました。けれども、ディミートリアスの目の魔法は、そのままにしておきました。
In the morning, the Duke found the four young people. Now Lysander loved Hermia again, and Demetrius loved Helena. The Duke was happy. "You do not need to marry Demetrius," he told Hermia. So there were two happy weddings in Athens. And the four lovers always remembered that night in the woods as a strange and wonderful dream.
朝になって、公爵が四人の若者を見つけました。今ではライサンダーはまたハーミアを愛し、ディミートリアスはヘレナを愛していました。公爵は喜びました。「ディミートリアスと結婚しなくてもよいぞ」と公爵はハーミアに言いました。こうして、アテネでは二組の幸せな結婚式があげられました。そして四人の恋人たちは、森でのあの一夜を、不思議ですばらしい夢として、いつまでも覚えていたのでした。
