It was ten o'clock at night in New York. A cold wind was blowing, and it was starting to rain. There were very few people on the street. A police officer was walking slowly along, checking the doors of the shops. Most of the shops were closed and dark.
In the doorway of a dark hardware store, a man was standing with a cigar in his mouth. When the officer came near, the man spoke quickly.
"It's all right, officer," he said. "I'm just waiting for a friend. Twenty years ago we made a promise to meet here tonight. There was a restaurant here then. It was called Big Joe Brady's."
"Yes," said the officer. "It was here until five years ago. Then they pulled it down."
The man lit his cigar with a match. In the light, the officer saw his face. It was pale, with sharp eyes and a small white scar near the right eyebrow. A large diamond was shining on his tie.
"Twenty years ago tonight," the man said, "I had dinner here with Jimmy Wells. He was my best friend. We grew up together here in New York, like brothers. I was eighteen, and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was going to the West to make my fortune. Jimmy didn't want to leave New York. So we made a promise. 'In twenty years, we will meet here again at ten o'clock,' we said. 'Wherever we are.'"
"Did you hear from your friend after that?" asked the officer.
"We wrote letters for a while," said the man. "But the West is a big place, and I moved around a lot. Then the letters stopped. But I know Jimmy. If he is alive, he will come. He was always the most honest and faithful man in the world." He took out a beautiful gold watch with small diamonds on it. "Three minutes to ten," he said.
"Did you do well in the West?" asked the officer.
"Of course! I hope Jimmy did half as well. He was a good man, but slow. In the West you have to be sharp to get money."
"I'll be on my way," said the officer. "I hope your friend comes. Good night."
The man waited. The rain became heavier, and the wind became colder. Twenty minutes passed. Then a tall man in a long coat hurried across the street. His collar was turned up around his ears.
"Is that you, Bob?" he asked.
"Is that you, Jimmy Wells?" cried the man in the doorway.
The tall man took both his hands. "It's Bob! I knew I would find you here. Twenty years is a long time! Come on, let's go somewhere warm and talk."
Arm in arm, the two men walked up the street. Bob talked happily about his success in the West. At the corner, there was a drugstore with bright lights. When they came into the light, Bob suddenly stopped and pulled his arm away.
"You're not Jimmy Wells!" he said. "Twenty years is a long time, but it can't change the shape of a man's nose."
"It can change a good man into a bad one," said the tall man. "I arrested you ten minutes ago, Silky Bob. The police in Chicago are looking for you. Before we go to the station, here is a note for you. Officer Wells asked me to give it to you."
Bob opened the small piece of paper. His hand was steady when he began to read. But it was shaking a little at the end. The note was short.
"Bob, I was at the place on time. When you lit your cigar, I saw your face. It was the face of the man the Chicago police want. I couldn't arrest you myself. So I went and found another officer to do it. Jimmy."
