One morning, Winnie-the-Pooh was walking through the forest, humming a little song. Soon he came to a big hole in a sandy bank.
"Aha!" said Pooh. "If I know anything about anything, that hole means Rabbit. And Rabbit means Company. And Company means Food and Listening-to-Me-Humming and such like."
So he put his head into the hole and called out, "Is anybody at home?"
There was a sudden noise from inside the hole, and then it was quiet. "I said, is anybody at home?" Pooh called out again, very loudly. "No!" said a voice. "You needn't shout so loudly. I heard you quite well the first time."
"Bother!" said Pooh. "Isn't there anybody here at all?" "Nobody." Pooh took his head out of the hole and thought for a while. "There must be somebody there," he thought, "because somebody must have said 'Nobody.'" So he put his head back in. "Hello, Rabbit, isn't that you?" "No," said Rabbit, in a different sort of voice this time.
But in the end, Rabbit let Pooh come in, because it was Pooh. "Would you like something to eat?" Rabbit asked. Pooh always liked a little something at eleven o'clock in the morning. "Honey or milk with your bread?" asked Rabbit. "Both," said Pooh happily. Then, so that he wouldn't seem greedy, he added, "But don't bother about the bread, please."
Pooh ate and ate for a long time. At last, he stood up, shook Rabbit's hand, and said that he must be going. Then he began to climb out of the hole. He pulled with his front paws and pushed with his back paws. In a little while, his nose was out in the open again. Then his ears, then his front paws, then his shoulders. And then...
"Oh, help!" said Pooh. "I'd better go back." "Oh, bother!" said Pooh. "I shall have to go on." "I can't do either! Oh, help and bother!"
Pooh was stuck. Half of him was outside the hole, and half of him was inside. Rabbit went out of his back door and came around to look at him. "Are you stuck?" he asked. "N-no," said Pooh. "Just resting and thinking and humming to myself." "Here, give me a paw." Rabbit pulled and pulled, but Pooh did not move.
"It all comes," said Rabbit, "of eating too much." Then Rabbit went to get Christopher Robin.
Christopher Robin came and looked at Pooh's front end. "Silly old Bear," he said, in such a loving voice that everybody felt hopeful again. "We'll have to wait until you get thin again." "How long does getting thin take?" asked Pooh, worried. "About a week, I should think." "But I can't stay here for a week!"
But he did. For a whole week, Christopher Robin read to Pooh's top end to cheer him up. And Rabbit hung his washing on Pooh's back legs, because they were inside his house anyway.
At the end of the week, Christopher Robin said, "Now!" He took hold of Pooh's front paws. Rabbit held onto Christopher Robin. All of Rabbit's friends and relations held onto Rabbit. And they all pulled together.
For a long time, Pooh only said "Ow!" and "Oh!" Then, all of a sudden, he said "Pop!" just like a cork coming out of a bottle. Christopher Robin, Rabbit, and all of Rabbit's friends and relations fell over backwards, one on top of another. And on the top of them all was Winnie-the-Pooh, free at last!
Pooh said thank you to his friends, and he walked on through the forest, humming proudly to himself. Christopher Robin watched him go lovingly. "Silly old Bear!" he said to himself.
