Every afternoon after school, the children played in the Giant's garden. It was a big, lovely garden with twelve peach trees. Birds sang in the trees. "We are so happy here!" said the children.
One day the Giant came home. He saw the children and shouted, "What are you doing here? This is my garden!" The children ran away.
The Giant built a high wall around the garden. He was a very selfish Giant. Now the children had nowhere to play.
Then spring came, with flowers and birds everywhere. But in the Giant's garden it was still winter. Snow covered the grass, and the North Wind blew all day. "Why is spring so late?" said the Giant. Spring never came, and summer never came.
One morning the Giant heard a sweet bird. He looked out. The children were in the garden! They came in through a little hole in the wall. They sat in the trees, and the trees had flowers again. Spring was back.
But in one corner it was still winter. A very little boy stood there. He was very small, and he could not climb the tree. He was crying.
The Giant's heart was warm now. "I was so selfish!" he said. He went out softly and put him gently in the tree. At once the tree had flowers. The boy put his arms around the Giant's neck and kissed him.
"It is your garden now, children," said the Giant. He knocked down the wall. Every day the children played with him. But the little boy never came again. The Giant missed him very much.
Many years went by, and the Giant was old. One winter morning he looked out. In the corner there was a tree with white flowers, and under it stood the little boy! There were wounds on his hands and feet. "Who hurt you?" cried the Giant. "These are the wounds of love," said the child.
The boy smiled. "You let me play in your garden once," he said. "Come with me to my garden today. Its name is Paradise." That afternoon the children found the Giant under the tree. He was dead, and he was covered with white flowers.
