Five little peas lived in a pod. The pod was green, and the peas were green. So they thought the whole world was green!
The sun was warm, and the rain was soft. The peas grew bigger and bigger. "We can't sit here forever," they said. "Something is waiting for us outside."
Weeks went by. The pod turned yellow, and the peas turned yellow. "Now the whole world is yellow," they said.
One day, a boy picked the pod. He opened it and put the peas into his pea-shooter. "Now I'm going out into the wide world!" said the first pea. "Catch me if you can!" And off it flew.
"I'm going to fly to the sun," said the second pea. And off it flew.
"We will sleep wherever we land," said the third and fourth peas. And off they flew.
"What will happen, will happen," said the last pea. It flew up to an old window. It fell into a little crack with some soft earth in it, and there it stayed.
Behind the window lived a poor woman and her little daughter. The girl was sick. She lay in bed all day, and her mother went out to work.
In spring, the girl saw something green at the window. "Mother, what is that?" It was a little pea plant! Every day the girl watched it grow. "I feel better, Mother," she said. "I'm getting well, just like my little plant."
Soon the girl could sit up. Then she could walk to the window. One morning, a pretty pink and white flower opened on the plant. The girl touched its soft leaves and thanked God for it.
And the other peas? Pigeons ate the first pea and the two sleepy peas. The pea that wanted to fly to the sun fell into a dirty roof gutter. It lay in the water and got fatter and fatter. "I am the most wonderful pea of all!" it said proudly.
But at the window, the little girl smiled at her pea flower. Her eyes were bright, and her cheeks were pink again.
