There once was a shoemaker. He worked hard, but he was very poor. One evening he had only enough leather for one pair of shoes. He cut the leather and put it on his table. "I will make the shoes tomorrow morning," he said, and he went to bed.
In the morning, he found a pair of shoes on the table. They were finished, and they were beautiful! Every stitch was perfect.
Soon a man came into the shop. He loved the shoes and paid a lot of money for them. With that money, the shoemaker bought leather for two pairs. He cut it in the evening, and in the morning, two pairs of shoes were ready. The next morning there were four pairs. Soon the shoemaker was rich.
One evening before Christmas, he said to his wife, "Who is helping us? Let's stay up tonight and see." They hid behind some coats in the corner.
At midnight, two little elves came in. They had no clothes on at all! They sat at the table and began to work. Tap, tap, tap! They worked very fast. When the shoes were finished, they ran away.
In the morning the wife said, "Those little men helped us so much. But they have no clothes. They must be cold. I will make them little shirts, coats and trousers. You can make them little shoes."
That night they put the presents on the table and hid again. At midnight the elves came. They saw the little clothes and laughed with joy. They put them on quickly and sang, "Look at us! How fine we are! No more shoes for us to make!"
They danced over the chairs and tables and out of the door. They never came back. But the shoemaker and his wife were happy for the rest of their lives.
