One day, the Buddha was walking by the lotus pond in Paradise. The flowers were as white as pearls and smelled wonderful. It was morning in Paradise.
Far below the pond was the bottom of Hell. The water was as clear as glass, so the Buddha could see Hell through it.
There he saw a man named Kandata. Kandata was a great robber. He killed people and set fire to houses. But he did one good thing. He almost stepped on a little spider, but he stopped. "It is small, but it is alive," he thought. And he let it go.
The Buddha remembered this and wanted to save him. A spider of Paradise was making a silver thread on a lotus leaf. The Buddha took the thread and let it down, straight to the bottom of Hell.
Kandata was in the Pond of Blood with other bad people. It was dark and quiet there. He could only struggle, like a dying frog.
One day, Kandata looked up. A thin silver thread was coming down to him. "If I climb this, I can get out of Hell!" he thought. "Maybe I can even get into Paradise!"
He held the thread and climbed up and up. But Paradise was very far away. Soon he got tired and stopped to rest.
The Pond of Blood was far below him now. "I can do it!" he laughed. But then he saw something terrible. Many, many people were climbing the thread under him, like a long line of ants.
"This thread is so thin! It will break!" he thought. So he shouted, "Hey! This spider's thread is mine! Go down! Go down!"
Just then, the thread broke with a snap, just above Kandata's hands. He fell down into the dark, turning round and round like a top. Only a short piece of the thread was left, shining in the sky with no moon and no stars.
The Buddha watched everything from the pond. Kandata thought only of himself. When he sank to the bottom like a stone, the Buddha looked sad and began to walk again.
But the lotus flowers did not care at all. They moved gently around the Buddha's feet and still smelled wonderful. It was almost noon in Paradise.
