Long ago, there were two old men. They both had a big kobu on the right cheek. A kobu is a big round lump, like a small ball.
One old man was cheerful. He loved to sing and dance. The other old man was grumpy. He did not like anything.
One day, the cheerful old man went to the mountain to cut wood. It started to rain, so he hid inside a big tree. He fell asleep.
When he woke up, it was night. He heard music. Ten, ten, ten! He looked out. Oni were having a party! Red oni, blue oni, big oni, small oni. They were drinking and dancing.
The music was so fun. His feet started to move. He jumped out of the tree and danced! He danced like a monkey. He danced like a fish. The oni laughed and clapped.
"You are a great dancer!" said the oni boss. "Come again tomorrow night. To make sure you come back, we will keep this." He pulled off the old man's kobu. Pop! It did not hurt at all.
The old man went home with a smooth cheek. The grumpy old man saw it. "I want to do that, too!"
The next night, he went to the oni party. But he did not like dancing. He moved like a stiff old stick. He stepped on an oni's foot. He sang very badly.
"Boring! Terrible!" shouted the oni boss. "Take your kobu back!" He threw the kobu at him. Pop! It stuck on his left cheek.
So the grumpy old man went home with two kobu, one on each side. And he was grumpier than ever.
