In a small village, there lived a young man named Taro. He slept all day and all night. He slept in spring. He slept in summer. He slept in fall and winter, too.
People called him Netaro. Neru means to sleep in Japanese. "Netaro is so lazy," they said. "He does nothing."
One year, there was no rain. The rice fields were dry. The river was far away, down below the village. The rice was dying, and people were very worried.
Netaro slept for one year. Then two years. Then three years. His mother cried. "Taro, please wake up!"
One morning, after three years, Netaro opened his eyes. He sat up. He stretched. "Ah, I have an idea," he said.
He walked up the mountain behind the village. Everyone followed him. "Where is lazy Netaro going?"
At the top, there was a huge rock. Behind it, there was a river. Netaro pushed the rock. He pushed and pushed. His face turned red. Crack! The rock rolled down the other side.
The water from the river came over the mountain. It ran down to the village. It filled the dry fields. The rice turned green again!
"Netaro! Thank you!" everyone shouted. "Were you really sleeping for three years?"
Netaro smiled. "I was thinking for three years," he said. Then he yawned. "And now I am very tired. Good night."
