A kind old man had a little pet sparrow. Every day, he talked to it and gave it rice. "Chun, chun!" the sparrow sang.
But his wife did not like the bird. One day, she made some starch paste for washing clothes. The hungry sparrow ate it all up.
"You bad bird!" she shouted. She took her big scissors and waved them in the air. Snip, snip! The scared sparrow flew away into the mountains.
The old man was very sad. "Little sparrow, where are you?" He walked and walked into the mountains. At last he found a small house in the bamboo. It was the sparrows' inn.
"Welcome!" said his sparrow. The sparrows gave him a fine dinner. They danced the sparrow dance for him. He had a wonderful time.
When he was leaving, the sparrow brought two tsuzura. Tsuzura are baskets with lids. One was big, and one was small. "Please take one as a gift."
"I am old," he said. "I will take the small one." At home, he opened it. It was full of gold and jewels!
"I want the big one!" said his wife. She ran into the mountains and found the inn. She took the big basket and did not say thank you.
It was very heavy. On the road, she could not wait. She opened the lid. Out came a ghost with one big eye! Then snakes! Then huge bugs! "Aaah!" She dropped the basket and ran all the way home.
After that day, she was never greedy again. Well, almost never.
