The Nose

Everyone in Ike-no-o knew Zenchi Naigu's nose. Naigu was a Buddhist monk, over fifty years old. His nose hung down from above his lip to below his chin, like a long, fat sausage.

池の尾の町で、禅智内供の鼻を知らない人はいませんでした。内供は、五十歳を過ぎたお坊さんです。その鼻は上くちびるの上からあごの下までぶら下がっていて、まるで太く長いソーセージのようでした。

Naigu acted as if he did not care about his nose. But in his heart, he worried about it all the time.

内供は、鼻のことなど気にしていないような顔をしていました。けれども心の中では、いつも鼻のことで悩んでいたのです。

At meals, a student had to hold up his nose with a board. Once, a boy did this job, but he sneezed, and the nose fell into the rice porridge! But more than anything, the nose hurt Naigu's pride.

食事のときには、弟子のひとりが、板で鼻を持ち上げていなければなりませんでした。あるとき、ひとりの少年がこの役をしたのですが、くしゃみをしたひょうしに、鼻をおかゆの中へ落としてしまいました。けれども何よりも、この鼻は内供の自尊心を傷つけていたのです。

He looked in the mirror, but his nose never looked shorter. He drank medicine, but nothing worked.

鏡をのぞいてみても、鼻が短く見えたことは一度もありません。薬も飲んでみましたが、何をしてもききませんでした。

One autumn, a student came back from Kyoto. A doctor there taught him a way to make a long nose short. "I don't really care about my nose," said Naigu. But he wanted the student to ask him to try it. The student asked many times, and at last Naigu said yes.

ある年の秋、弟子のひとりが、京都の医者から、長い鼻を短くする方法を教わってきました。「わしは、鼻のことなど別に気にしておらんよ」と内供は言いました。けれども本当は、弟子がその方法をすすめてくれるのを待っていたのです。弟子は何度もすすめました。そしてとうとう、内供はためしてみることにしました。

First, they boiled the nose in hot water. Then the student stepped on it. They boiled it once more, and the nose was short! "Now nobody will laugh at me," Naigu thought happily.

まず、鼻をお湯でゆでます。それから、弟子がその鼻を足で踏みます。もう一度ゆでると、鼻は短くなっていました。「こうなれば、もう誰も笑う者はいないにちがいない」と、内供はうれしく思いました。

But a few days later, people laughed at him more than before. The boy who dropped the nose into the porridge laughed out loud. The lower-ranking monks laughed behind his back.

ところが、二、三日たつと、人々は前よりももっと内供を笑うようになりました。あの、鼻をおかゆに落とした少年は、声をあげて笑い出しました。身分の低いお坊さんたちは、内供のかげでくすくす笑いました。

Naigu did not understand why. People feel sorry for someone with a problem. But when the problem goes away, they feel a little unhappy. They even want to see the problem come back.

内供には、そのわけがわかりませんでした。人は、困っている人を見ると気の毒に思います。けれども、その人が困りごとから抜け出すと、なんとなく物足りない気持ちになるのです。もう一度、その人が同じように困るところを見たいとさえ思うのです。

Naigu got angry at everyone. One day, he saw the boy chasing a dog with a stick. "Don't get hit on the nose!" the boy was shouting. Naigu took the stick and hit the boy with it. It was the old board for his nose. Now Naigu hated his short nose.

内供は、誰にでも腹を立てるようになりました。ある日、あの少年が、棒をふり回して犬を追いかけていました。「鼻を打たれるな。それ、鼻を打たれるな」とはやしたてています。内供はその棒をひったくって、少年をたたきました。それは、昔、鼻を持ち上げるのに使っていた、あの板だったのです。内供は、短くなった鼻がうらめしくなりました。

Then one cold, windy night, his nose felt itchy and hot. The next morning, yellow leaves covered the garden like gold. Naigu touched his nose. It was long again!

ある寒い、風の強い夜のことです。内供の鼻が、むずむずとかゆく、熱っぽくなりました。次の朝、庭は黄色い落ち葉におおわれて、黄金をしきつめたようでした。内供は鼻にさわってみました。鼻は、また長くなっていたのです。

Naigu felt happy and free, like the day his nose became short. "Now nobody will laugh at me," he whispered in his heart. His long nose swung in the autumn wind of the early morning.

内供は、鼻が短くなった日と同じような、晴れ晴れとした気持ちになりました。「こうなれば、もう誰も笑う者はいないにちがいない」と、内供は心の中でささやきました。長い鼻を、明け方の秋風にぶらつかせながら。
