One night, a thin, hungry wolf walked in the forest. He had no food for many days. Then he met a big dog. The dog was fat and strong, and his fur was shiny.
ある夜、やせて腹ぺこのオオカミが、森の中を歩いていました。オオカミはもう何日も、食べ物にありついていなかったのです。そこで、大きな犬に出会いました。犬はまるまると太っていて力強く、毛はつやつやと光っていました。
"Hello, cousin," said the wolf. "You look so healthy! Who gives you all that food?"
「やあ、いとこどの」と、オオカミは言いました。「ずいぶん元気そうだな！ だれがそんなにたくさん食べ物をくれるんだい？」
"My master gives it to me," said the dog. "I get meat and bread every day. I sleep in a warm house too."
「ご主人さまがくれるのさ」と、犬は答えました。「毎日、肉とパンがもらえる。それに、あたたかい家で眠れるんだ」
"Wow," said the wolf. "I am always hungry and cold. I want a life like yours."
「すごいな」と、オオカミは言いました。「おれはいつも腹ぺこで、寒い思いをしている。おまえのような暮らしがしたいよ」
"Then come with me," said the dog. "My master can feed you too. You just help him a little."
「それなら、一緒に来いよ」と、犬は言いました。「ご主人さまは、おまえにも食べさせてくれるさ。ちょっとお手伝いをすればいいだけだ」
The wolf was very happy. They walked together toward the village. But under the moon, the wolf saw something strange. There was a heavy wooden collar around the dog's neck. A long chain hung from it, and at the end of the chain there was a heavy log.
オオカミは大喜びでした。二ひきは一緒に村へ向かって歩いていきました。ところが月明かりの下で、オオカミはおかしなものに気づきました。犬の首のまわりに、重い木の首輪がはまっていたのです。そこから長いくさりがぶら下がっていて、くさりの先には重い丸太がついていました。
"What is that on your neck?" asked the wolf.
「首についているそれは何だい？」と、オオカミはたずねました。
"Oh, that," said the dog. "It is my collar. My master puts it on me in the day. I drag this log everywhere. I can't run far. But it is not so bad. I get food every day."
「ああ、これか」と、犬は言いました。「首輪だよ。昼間、ご主人さまがつけるんだ。この丸太をどこへでも引きずっていくのさ。遠くまでは走れない。でも、そんなに悪くないよ。毎日食べ物がもらえるんだから」
The wolf stopped walking. "You can't run where you want?" he asked.
オオカミは足を止めました。「行きたいところへ走っていけないのか？」と、オオカミはたずねました。
"No," said the dog. "Not always."
「ああ」と、犬は答えました。「いつもってわけにはいかないね」
"Then thank you, but no," said the wolf. "I am hungry, but I am free. With a heavy chain like that, I can't even enjoy my food! Good night, cousin." And he ran back into the forest under the bright moon.
「それなら、ありがたいが、ことわるよ」と、オオカミは言いました。「おれは腹ぺこだが、自由だ。そんな重いくさりをつけていたら、食べ物を味わうこともできやしない！ おやすみ、いとこどの」そう言うと、オオカミは明るい月の下、森の中へかけもどっていきました。
