A fox wanted to get into a farmer's garden. There was a tall fence of branches around it. So the fox started to climb over the fence.
He climbed higher and higher. But near the top, his foot slipped. "Whoa!" He started to fall. Quickly, he grabbed the nearest plant. It was a thornbush!
"Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!" cried the fox. The sharp thorns went into his paws. He let go and fell down onto the ground. His paws hurt very much. They were red and full of little thorns.
The fox was very angry. He looked up at the thornbush. "You bad, bad plant!" he shouted. "I was falling, and I came to you for help. But look at my paws! You hurt me more than the fall!"
The thornbush was quiet for a moment. Then it spoke. "Wait a minute, Mr. Fox," it said. "Look at me. I am a thornbush. I am covered with sharp thorns. I catch everything that touches me. That is my nature! Why did you grab me? That was your mistake, not mine."
The fox looked at his paws. Then he looked at the thorns. He had nothing to say. He walked home slowly on his sore paws, and he did not get into the garden that day.
