One hot summer day, a little ant felt very thirsty. She walked to the river for a drink. The ground was wet, and her feet slipped. Splash! She fell into the river.
"Help! Help!" cried the ant. The water was fast, and she could not swim. She went round and round in the river.
A white dove sat in a tree over the river. She saw the little ant. "Oh, the poor thing!" she said. She quickly picked a big green leaf with her beak and dropped it into the water near the ant.
The ant climbed onto the leaf. It was like a little boat. The leaf floated slowly to the side of the river, and the ant jumped onto dry land. "Thank you, kind dove!" she called. "You saved my life!"
A few days later, a hunter came to the river. He looked up and saw the dove in the tree. "What a nice fat bird," he said quietly. "I can catch her for my dinner." He got his net ready. The dove did not see him.
But the little ant saw him. "Oh no! My friend is in danger!" she thought. She ran to the hunter's foot and bit him as hard as she could.
"Ouch!" shouted the hunter. He jumped and dropped his net. The dove heard the noise and flew away into the blue sky. She was safe.
The dove landed in a tree far away and looked down at the ant. "Thank you, little friend," she said. "Today you saved my life."
