One day, a big eagle flew over the plains. Below, she saw a lion. He was lying in the shade of a tree. The eagle flew down and landed on a rock near him.
ある日、大きなワシが草原の上を飛んでいました。見下ろすと、ライオンがいます。ライオンは木陰で横になっていました。ワシは舞い降りて、ライオンの近くの岩にとまりました。
"Good day, great Lion," she said. "You are the king of the land. And I am the queen of the sky. Let's be partners! Together, we can be the strongest team in the world."
「こんにちは、偉大なライオンさん」と、ワシは言いました。「あなたは陸の王。そして、わたしは空の女王。手を組みましょうよ！ 一緒になれば、世界でいちばん強いチームになれるわ」
"Partners?" said the lion. He sat up. "That is an interesting idea."
「手を組む？」と言って、ライオンは身を起こしました。「それはおもしろい考えだな」
"Yes!" said the eagle. "On the ground, you can help me. In the sky, I can help you. I can see very far. I can tell you about danger. Let's do it!"
「そうでしょう！」と、ワシは言いました。「地上では、あなたがわたしを助けてくれる。空では、わたしがあなたを助けてあげる。わたしはとても遠くまで見えるの。危険が近づいたら、教えてあげられるわ。そうしましょうよ！」
The lion thought for a long moment. Then he said, "I like your idea. But first, I have a question."
ライオンは、しばらくじっと考えていました。それから言いました。「きみの考えは気に入った。だが、その前に一つ聞きたいことがある」
"What is it?" asked the eagle.
「何かしら？」と、ワシは尋ねました。
"What about the bad days?" said the lion. "On a bad day, how can I trust you? You have wings. You can fly away from me any time. I can't follow you up into the sky. So show me first. Show me that I can trust you. Then we can be partners."
「困ったことが起きたときはどうなる？」と、ライオンは言いました。「そんなとき、わたしはどうやってきみを信じればいい？ きみには翼がある。いつでもわたしを置いて飛んでいける。わたしは空の上まで追いかけていけない。だから、まず見せてくれ。わたしがきみを信じていいということを。それから手を組もう」
The eagle had no answer. She looked at her big wings. Then, without a word, she flew away into the sky. The lion lay down again in the shade. "Just as I thought," he said.
ワシは答えられませんでした。自分の大きな翼を見つめると、ひと言も言わずに空へ飛び去ってしまいました。ライオンは、また木陰に横になりました。「思った通りだ」と、ライオンは言いました。
