Many birds lived in a big bird house in a garden. One winter, some of the birds got sick. They coughed and sneezed. They stayed in their nests all day.
A hungry cat heard the news. "Sick birds!" he said, and he licked his lips. "Sick birds can't fly fast. This is my chance."
So the cat made a plan. He put on a long black coat and a pair of round glasses. He took a doctor's bag and a walking stick. He looked in the mirror. "Hello, I am Doctor Cat," he said in a deep voice. "Perfect!"
He walked to the bird house and knocked on the door. Knock, knock.
"Who is it?" asked the birds.
"Good morning, my dear birds," said the cat. "I am a doctor. I hear some of you are sick. Please open the door. I have good medicine in my bag. I can make you well again."
The birds looked through a little window. They saw the long coat and the glasses. But they also saw a long tail and sharp claws under the coat.
"Thank you, Doctor," said the oldest bird. "We are all very well. And we can stay well. Just go away and leave us alone!"
The cat's face turned red. He picked up his bag and went home with an empty stomach.
