A shepherd took his sheep to the forest. It was a warm autumn day. In the middle of the forest, he saw a very big oak tree. It was full of acorns.
"Look at all those acorns!" he said. "My sheep love acorns. I can get some for them."
He took off his cloak and spread it on the ground under the tree. "The acorns can fall onto my cloak," he said. Then he climbed up into the tree and shook the branches. Rattle, rattle! Hundreds of acorns fell down like rain.
The sheep ran to the tree. "Baa! Baa!" They were very happy. They ate and ate. They pushed and pulled with their mouths. But they did not see the cloak. Their feet stepped on it, and their teeth caught it. They pulled it this way and that way. Rip! Rip!
At last, the shepherd climbed down. He looked at his cloak on the ground. It was full of big holes. It was dirty and torn.
"Oh, you bad sheep!" he cried. "Your wool makes warm clothes for everyone in the world. But I feed you every day, and you tear my clothes!"
The sheep looked up at him. Then they went back to eating acorns. The shepherd sat down under the tree in his old torn cloak and sighed.
